Microservices Lecture

On 1 March 2018, we organised a lecture on Microservices for Python developers who want to develop complex distributed systems. Our presenters focused on the benefits and drawbacks of a microservices approach to software development.


They first explained what Microservices are and why they are so popular. Even tech giants like Netflix, Amazon and Apple take advantage of this architecture pattern. Monolithic architecture, which was previously built as a single unit, required rebuilding and deploying an entirely new version of the application for every modification or bug fix. With the implementation of Microservices the processes were simplified and became easily scalable. Other advantages of Microservices like independent development and deployment, continuous delivery and reusability were also discussed.

Our presenters shared their experience with Microservices. They gave examples of the difficulties they encountered when using the microservice architecture (such as the complexity of developing distributed systems, managing multiple databases and transactions and testing microservices-based applications) and explained how they could be overcome.

Over 30 people attended the lecture and stayed after its end to further discuss the various applications of Microservices. Some of the attendees shared their personal experience with the microservice architecture and asked for advice on how to solve particular problems they experienced while developing various applications.

Ultimately, everybody agreed that despite its drawbacks Microservices increase productivity and allow developers to work quickly, select their preferred programming language and focus on the specific product. Microservice architecture is worth serious consideration for evolving enterprise applications. Moreover, its challenges can be addressed with the right type of automation and tools.
